It is the end of the month. Your credit card bill is due. You open CRED, pay the bill, earn CRED Coins, and maybe receive cashback or a premium-brand offer. To the user, the experience can feel almost free.
So how does CRED make money?
Founded by Kunal Shah in 2018, CRED was built as a members-only platform for creditworthy Indians. Its current website says users generally need a credit score of 750 or above to qualify. That gives CRED an unusual audience: active credit-card users who are attractive to banks, insurers, and premium brands.

CRED started with credit card bill payments but has expanded into lending, UPI, insurance, vehicle services, shopping, digital gold, fixed deposits, and other financial products. In FY2024-25, CRED reported operating revenue of about ₹2,735 crore. Lending, payments, and insurance were among its top revenue drivers.
To understand the CRED business model, the key is to see how the company turns a high-trust user base into a distribution platform for financial services, payments, and premium brands. Let’s break down the model step by step.
1. Lending and Personal Credit Through CRED Cash
Lending is one of CRED’s most important revenue engines.
Through CRED Cash and related products, eligible members can receive personal loan offers inside the app. The actual loans are provided by partner banks and finance companies such as IDFC FIRST Bank, DBS Bank, L&T Finance, and Newtap Finance.
CRED mainly acts as a lending service provider. It helps lenders find eligible borrowers, complete digital applications, service loans, and collect repayments.
Suppose Rahul is offered a ₹2 lakh loan through CRED. The lender provides the money and charges interest. A processing fee may also apply. CRED’s current loan documents say the exact rate and processing charge are disclosed in the Key Facts Statement and can vary by lender and offer.
So it is more accurate to say CRED earns through sourcing, servicing, distribution, and commercial arrangements with lending partners rather than simply keeping all the interest paid by borrowers.
The scale is large. CRED said its lending business reached about ₹22,000 crore in managed assets in FY2024-25 and was one of its top three revenue contributors.
CRED also offers CRED Cash+, which lets eligible users borrow against mutual fund investments through partner lenders.
2. What About CRED Mint?
CRED Mint was created as a peer-to-peer investment product with LiquiLoans. Members could invest money through the regulated P2P platform.
CRED’s current terms still contain Mint provisions, but LiquiLoans says it paused new transactions after regulatory changes in August 2024.
So Mint should not be treated as a major current growth engine. Today, CRED Cash and secured lending products such as CRED Cash+ are more important to the lending story.
3. Convenience and Payment Fees
Normal credit card bill payment on CRED is free.
However, CRED has expanded into other transactions where a convenience, platform, processing, or payment-instrument fee can apply. These can include certain education, rent, wallet, and partner-service payments.
The charge is not a fixed 1% or 1.5% across every transaction. CRED’s current terms say any applicable fee is shown before the user confirms payment.
For example, a parent paying an education fee through CRED with a credit card may see a convenience charge at checkout. That fee can become direct revenue for CRED.
It is also important to separate CRED’s own fee from charges imposed by the user’s credit-card bank.
4. Merchant Fees Through CRED Pay
CRED Pay lets customers pay on partner websites using cards, UPI, CRED Wallet, and other supported methods.
For merchants, the attraction is CRED’s high-spending, creditworthy user base. CRED’s merchant terms show that partner merchants can be charged agreed fees for CRED Pay and payment-aggregation services.
Imagine a premium fashion website adding CRED Pay at checkout. A member receives a personalised offer and completes the purchase quickly. The merchant gets access to a valuable customer segment, while CRED earns according to the merchant agreement.
This is different from CRED Store itself.
CRED currently promotes 0% commission for brands listing on CRED Store. So it would be inaccurate to say every Store sale gives CRED a standard marketplace commission.
The stronger commercial opportunity comes from CRED Pay fees, promotions, rewards partnerships, and brand marketing campaigns.
5. Brand Advertising and Premium Partnerships
CRED’s biggest commercial asset is its audience.
Brands can work with CRED through:
- CRED Store
- CRED Pay
- CRED Rewards
- Special marketing campaigns
- Product launches and member-only offers
A premium headphone brand, for example, may prefer launching to CRED members instead of advertising to a broad random audience.
CRED can earn through negotiated marketing and partnership arrangements. Brands get access to an attractive customer group, while CRED adds revenue without charging members a subscription.
6. Insurance and Financial Product Distribution
Insurance has become a major revenue area. CRED said insurance was one of its top three revenue drivers in FY2024-25.
CRED Garage offers vehicle information and personalised motor-insurance recommendations. More insurers joined Garage during FY25, which CRED said helped expand insurance revenue.
When a member buys or renews insurance through the platform, CRED can earn distribution-related income under its partner arrangement.
CRED also facilitates other financial products, including:
- Digital gold through SafeGold
- Fixed deposits from partner financial institutions
- Loans against mutual funds
- The CRED IndusInd Bank RuPay credit card
CRED does not itself issue the gold, fixed deposit, or card. It acts as a distributor or facilitator and can earn according to the commercial arrangement with the regulated provider.
7. CRED Garage and Vehicle Monetization
CRED Garage gives car owners another reason to keep using the app.
Users can link vehicles and access information such as registration details, challans, and insurance services.
The clearest monetization opportunity is motor-insurance distribution and other partner services. FASTag, challan, and vehicle-management features can also increase engagement even when they do not carry a direct fee.
That matters because the more often users open CRED, the more opportunities the company has to distribute paid financial products.
8. The Co-Branded Credit Card Opportunity
CRED now also offers a co-branded RuPay credit card with IndusInd Bank.
IndusInd Bank issues the card. CRED facilitates the application experience and manages the rewards program.
Co-branded cards can create commercial value through customer sourcing, rewards partnerships, engagement, and revenue-sharing arrangements.
They also give CRED another way to deepen its relationship with members beyond helping them pay other banks’ credit card bills.
9. Why the Members-Only Model Works
CRED’s biggest advantage is the type of customer it attracts.
A credit score of 750 or above does not guarantee that someone is wealthy or will never default. But it does create a filtered pool of consumers with relatively strong credit histories.
That audience is valuable to:
- Banks looking for borrowers
- Insurers looking for customers
- Premium brands looking for higher-spending shoppers
- Card issuers looking for active credit users
CRED said 45% of its active members used three or more products in FY2024-25. Members using more products also generated higher revenue per user.
That is the core strategy: bring a member in through a simple habit such as paying a credit card bill, then offer loans, insurance, payments, shopping, wealth products, and vehicle services over time.
Conclusion
CRED started by rewarding people for paying credit card bills on time, but the bill payment itself is not the main money-maker.
The real value lies in the high-credit-quality member base built around that habit.
Lending is now a major revenue engine through partner banks and finance companies. CRED Pay creates merchant and payment-fee opportunities. Specialised payments can carry convenience charges. Insurance distribution, co-branded financial products, digital gold, fixed deposits, and vehicle services add more ways to earn.
Premium brands also value access to CRED members through rewards and marketing partnerships.
In simple words, the CRED business model works by bringing creditworthy Indians into one members-only ecosystem and earning when banks, insurers, merchants, and members use higher-value financial and lifestyle services around that trusted relationship.
